St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 19/08/2024:

Village Barn Ladies Senior Championship:

St Lomans Mullingar 2-06 Milltown 0-10

Last Thursday night our senior ladies bounced back in style, after a disappointing performance in the downs, to beating the county champions just five days later. The Rathconrath outfit got the first score in Lakepoint Park but this would be the only time in the match where they were in front. After five minutes brilliant work from Lucy McCartan and Shannon Breslin put Katie Kilmurray through on goal and our top marksperson duly found the net in composed fashion.

The sides then traded scores with Ciara Blundell and Vicky Carr on target for the home side, Leanne Slevin and Grainne Byrne did the damage for the visitors. Caoimhe Kilmurray increased the gap to three by opening her account. From the resulting kick out, Katie Kilmurray intercepted a short kick and managed to brilliantly lob the goalkeeper and find the empty net to put the blues in the driving seat. Vicky Carr doubled her tally with a brilliant score to give the saints a seven point cushion at the interval.

The third quarter saw Milltown put a huge amount of pressure on the hosts with seven unanswered points in a twenty minute spell to draw the side’s level. At this point it looked as though the county champions would go and take the victory from here. However, Ciaran Kilmurray’s side managed to weather the storm, two brilliant turnovers from Lucy McCartan culminated in Lomans winning a free at the far end on both occasions. Katie Kilmurray held her nerve and managed to kick both scores ro give her team a slender lead going into injury time.

With several injuries, the Mullingar side had nearly ten minutes of injury time to contend with, but the defence held firm and the Lomans ladies sealed a third win of the year over the championship favourites. The game was less open than previous encounters but still very entertaining and played to a high standard. It was a tense atmosphere with both sides desperate for the victory but it was the blues who managed to just get the right side of the result.

When a poor performance comes, all you can ask for is a reaction and Ciaran Kilmurray’s side had the perfect response on this occasion. An organised Saints side had their defence to thank on the night with all six backs putting in great performances. In particular Megan Ennis and Muireann Scally were excellent, along with Katie Dunne who managed to keep Sarah Dillon (probably the best player in the county) scoreless.

The midfield paring of Vicky Carr and Caoimhe Kilmurray put in a huge shift. Lucy McCartan, although not scoring, was creator in chief and ran the game from centre-forward. Katie Kilmurray managed to produce her magic up top again and was brilliant throughout. It’s usually the forwards who get the plaudits, but on this occasion it feels wrong not to award player of the match to a back. Overall it’s hard to look past Katie Dunne for player of the match. A brilliant result for this team who face newly promoted St Joseph’s away next Thursday.

Bake Sale Fundraiser:

We urge everyone who can to support our cake sale on Saturday week August 24th. It’s in aid of CJ’s rainbow cycle which is taking place from Malin to Mizen head that weekend.

C.J. McCann was just 21 months old when he lost his battle with a rare and aggressive brain cancer: ATRT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumour), in October last year. In his memory - and to help other families who need support after a child is diagnosed with cancer - CJ’s Dad Joe and 20 friends are taking on the massive cycling challenge.

CJ‘s parents Niamh and Joe are both heavily involved in the GAA all their lives. Niamh’s Mam Greta will be known to many of you around the club. If you can help in any way - either by making some cakes or donating on the day - we’d really appreciate it
